Sharp & Fine…
is a San Francisco-based contemporary dance company co-founded in 2011 by sisters Megan and Shannon Kurashige to facilitate choreographic work that grows out of a shared history of experience in both classical ballet and contemporary dance and a desire for deep collaboration with artists from different disciplines.
We create narrative performance work that brings together physically exuberant choreography, emotionally nuanced text, live music, and multi-disciplinary collaboration. Our work is informed by the technical rigor of classical ballet, the human intensity of contemporary forms, and the conviction that telling a story built on personal truths is a powerful and communal act of communication and empathy.
S&F works with composers, musicians, writers and a group of dancers who have helped us continuously develop and refine our creative process.
History:
S&F has premiered eight evening-length works at Z Space and ODC Theater and shorter works at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, Theater of Yugen, Merde Project, and Soundwave. In 2017, we were commissioned to create two short pieces for the NEA-supported Fermentation Lab/Symposium at the Theatre of Yugen. S&F was a resident company at the SF Conservatory of Dance from 2012-2018 and has been presented by the RAWdance CONCEPT series, SFCD Summer Dance Series, and LEVYdance Salon. S&F is fiscally sponsored by Dancers’ Group and has received support from CA$H, Zellerbach Family Foundation, ODC Theater, Rainin Opportunity Fund, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and Lighting Artists in Dance Award.
